Bone & Joint Institute Awards Academic Player of the Year at the 4th Annual Football Banquet
February 3, 2014 – JESUP, GA – In their fourth consecutive year, The Bone and Joint Institute of South Georgia continued their support of In the Game magazine’s Annual Southeast Georgia High School Football Awards Banquet held in Waycross on December 16th. The annual event recognizes players and coaches from Southeast Georgia Schools for excellent achievement in athletics and academics. In addition each year, one recipient is recognized with a Humanitarian Award.
The 2013 Bone & Joint Institute Academic Player of the Year was awarded to Jamez Davis of Charlton County High School. The award was presented by Dr. Christopher E. Swanson of BJI who praised Davis for his outstanding academic achievements as well as his athletic abilities.
Scholar-athlete Jamez Davis was recently named to the Class 2-A All Region 2nd Team Offense. Coaches also named him as a region representative for the All-Academic Team. In Davis’s senior year, the offensive linemen and the rest of Charlton County Indians advanced to the state playoffs for the first time since 2006. He has a 4.0 grade point average, and his resume includes membership in the Beta Club and National Honor Society, as well as numerous other accolades. After graduation, Davis plans to attend college and pursue his aspiration of becoming a doctor. He has already begun attending medical seminars at prestigious institutions including Emory University.
“It’s especially rewarding for us to be able to honor such a well-rounded student as Jamez Davis who excels not only athletically but also academically. Dr. Kenerly, Dr. Valosen, and I congratulate him on all his achievements. These student athletes should be very proud of all their efforts. They’re an inspiration to us all. All of us at Bone & Joint look forward to being a part of this event each year,” said Dr. Swanson.
In the Game High School Sports Magazine is a monthly publication that recognizes outstanding student athletes from more than 120 public and private high schools in Southeast Georgia. Other banquet honorees were:
Raekwon McMillan (Liberty County High School) – Okefenokee Technical College Defensive Player of the Year; Krenwick Sanders (Wayne County High School) – PrimeSouthBank/Walker Jones/Flash Foods Offensive Player of the Year; Randon Jernigan (Risley Middle School) – Crosby of Camden Middle School Player of the Year; Darius Foreman (Peirce County High School) – Crosby Cadillac GMC Nissan Special Teams Player of the Year; Coach Rich McWhorter (Charlton County High School) – C & C Sports Coach of the Year; and Todd Veal – Mayo Clinic Health System Humanitarian Award.

Orthopedic surgeon, Christopher E. Swanson, MD, specializes in the treatment of sports-related and traumatic injuries of the musculoskeletal system. He has an exceptional Sports Medicine background including having been assistant to the head physician of the Cincinnati Bengals before joining the Bone & Joint practice. As an active member of the orthopedic community and one who thrives on new and cutting edge treatments, Swanson has participated in several Orthopedic and Sports Medicine presentations with subjects ranging from knee replacements to pain control and care of post-operative fractures. Swanson earned his MD Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2007.
Dr. Valosen, a partner at BJI, began his career in the US Army and was previously the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgical Services at Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart. He specializes in arthroscopic approaches to most orthopaedic conditions, joint replacement surgery, and many other orthopedic surgical procedures. Valosen, who earned his MD Degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in 2003, is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, and a member of the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr. J. Lex Kenerly, the founding partner of BJI, is a Jesup native and has practiced orthopaedic surgery in the region for more than 25 years. He specializes in sports medicine, total joint replacement of the hip, knee, shoulder, and more. Kenerly is a graduate of Wayne Country High School, The University of Georgia, and the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. After his orthopedic surgery residency he returned to his hometown to open Kenerly Orthopedic Center where he practiced for over 20 years. In the summer of 2010, he opened the state of the art 15,000 square foot Bone and Joint Institute of South Georgia.
