Cork-Howard Construction Awarded for Construction of The Bone & Joint Institute of South Georgia
AUGUST 4, 2011 – ATLANTA, GA – The Bone & Joint Institute of South Georgia’s (BJISG) general contractor, Cork-Howard Construction, has been recognized by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), Georgia Branch, with a 2011 Build Georgia Award for their construction of the facility. The award was presented at the AGC’s annual convention in June.
The Build Georgia General Contractor Award competition seeks to honor excellent construction projects throughout the state. The key judging criteria for the 2011 program included: exceptional project safety performance; meeting the challenge of a difficult job; innovation in construction techniques and materials; excellence in project management and scheduling; and excellence in client service.
“We extend our congratulations to Cork-Howard for this prestigious award,” said Dr. J. Lex Kenerly, owner of BJISG. “Our staff and their team worked together throughout this project, overcoming many challenges, to provide residents of Jesup and surrounding areas access to a fully operational medical facility to meet their growing needs.”
Working in close association with Kenerly, architect Mark Yeager of Design Consultants International, and Larry Wallis, Owners Representative of Newman Development in Edmond, OK, Cork-Howard incorporated state-of-the-art technology within a stunning design of natural timber and stone.
Stone and timber frame the front entrance, and the trusses used for the facility entrance were made of a unique pecan shell blasted timber, manufactured in Oregon and shipped to site. These timbers are a focal point for the reception area and portico, and were a challenging part of this construction project.
The complexity of the installation of the sophisticated medical equipment added to the challenges of the project as well. BJISG houses a complete Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite with all the required Radio Frequency (RF) shielding and non- magnetic construction, including exterior windows installed to allow natural lighting and ease patient confinement concerns. There is also a full X-Ray suite accompanied by high-tech equipment and all associated lead-lined construction detail.
According to a representative of Cork-Howard, construction of the facility to the satisfaction of Dr. Kenerly and the architect was “job one”, but the company never lost sight that the residents of Jesup and the surrounding communities would also be greatly impacted by this construction project.
The Bone & Joint Institute provides convenient, comprehensive orthopaedic services, featuring the ambulatory surgery center with digital surgical suites designed exclusively for orthopaedic surgeries, along with x-ray services and the only on-site Open MRI within 40 miles of Jesup. BJISG serves 10 Southeast Georgia Counties, and has a satellite office in Baxley.
Dr. Kenerly, a Jesup native, has practiced orthopaedic surgery in the region for more than 22 years and specializes in sports medicine, total joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder, and more. Kenerly is a graduate of Wayne Country High School, The University of Georgia, and the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the Greenville Hospital System and Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville, South Carolina, and returned to his hometown to practice.
